Database to help disabled get jobs

A database will be set up to identify disabled persons who have skills and need jobs in the State, according to Minister of Community Development and Consumer Affairs Datuk Hajah Azizah Mohd Dun. She said her Ministry, through Sabah Welfare Services Department, will conduct a survey with non-governmental bodies to gather information on the matter. “The information in the database will be given attention and handed to relevant authorities, and they will decide whether they want to employ the disabled persons and give them work,” she said when breaking fast with the Ministry’s staff, disabled persons, senior citizens and single mothers at the Beverly Hotel here yesterday. According to Azizah, the Ministry has received a report from Young Voices for Cheshire Alliance of Young PWDS on facilities and job opportunities, and the report has been handed over to relevant authorities. “The Government wants the relevant authorities to give one percent of job opportunities to the disabled persons to encourage them to be financially independent,” she said. At the event, a total of 150 persons from ten welfare institutions and NGOs, namely Single Mothers Association, Kiwanis Down’s Syndrome Kota Kinabalu Centre, Sabah Thalassaemia Association, Sekolah Sen Mengasih Tanjung Aru, Young Voices Cheshire Alliance of Young PWDS, Sekolah Tunas Bakti Inanam, Taman Sen Puteri Menggatal, Rumah Wargatua Sri Pritchard Kinarut, Rumah Kanak-Kanak Kota Kinabalu Beringgis Papar and Kompleks Pemulihan Orang Kurang Upaya Kimanis were given donations from various organisations and agencies.
